WV Sportline talks Neal Brown contract renegotiations

Details of a new contract may be announced in the coming week for West Virginia head coach Neal Brown, MetroNews’ Travis Jones and Greg Hunter revealed on Sunday’s episode of the Sportline podcast.

Numbers and specifications in the contract remain unknown, but renegotiations are underway according to MetroNews sources. Talks of a new contract for Brown quickly rose after WVU’s 9-4 season that included a Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Brown’s current contract is set to end after the 2026 season, where he will have earned $12.6 million across the final three years. In comparison, the Kansas Jayhawks, who also went 9-4, recently signed coach Lance Leipold to a six-year contract worth over $40 million, giving him over $2 million more than Brown on average per season.

On the podcast, Jones and Hunter discussed the importance of raising salaries of assistant coaches across WVU’s major sports. WVU Football’s assistant pool brings in roughly $3.81 million total per season, which ranked 13th among the Big 12’s 14 institutions this season. The crew emphasized that this is an issue particularly important according to WVU athletic director Wren Baker.

“The number of positions we have we’re very competitive in that regard, but the overall budget for those that’s an area where we have to spend some time and look at that,” Baker said.

It is safe to say that any contract negotiations for Brown will involve greater salaries or promises for the entire coaching staff. Such an improvement for the football staff would be an important step forward for West Virginia’s several other programs seeing newfound success.
