Big 12 Men’s Basketball Standings Update — March 4

With the men’s college basketball regular season coming to a close, the Big 12 conference is seeing a close race for teams in the middle of the pact.

Five teams are on a multiple-game winning streak, while others have been struggling to close out conference play.

No. 1 Houston leads the Big 12 as they have won seven Big 12 games in a row and hold a 13-3 record in conference play. They have two games remaining, one against UCF on Wednesday and their final game against No. 7 Kansas at home on Saturday.

One game back from Houston is No. 8 Iowa State at 12-4 in Big 12 play, who has a home game against BYU on Wednesday and then are on the road for their final game on Saturday at Kansas State. Both Houston and Iowa State are yet to lose at home this season. The two teams split the season series at a game a piece, both winning in their home arenas.

In sole place of third is No. 15 Baylor, who are 10-6 and three games back. The Bears have won back-to-back games and will face Texas at home on Monday and close out their regular season on the road against Texas Tech on Saturday.

In a three-way tie for third are BYU, No. 7 Kansas and Texas Tech, all of which are 9-7 in conference play and four games back. All have tough tasks in front of them to close out the season as they all play a ranked Big 12 opponent in their final two games. The Jayhawks have lost back-to-back games to Baylor and BYU, which means the Cougars would hold the tiebreaker over Kansas. However, Texas Tech has defeated both teams this season.

At five games back is both Texas and TCU at 8-8 in conference play. The Longhorns have won two in a row, while the Horned Frogs have lost two games back-to-back. Following them, tied with a 7-9 in Big 12 and six games back play are Kansas State and Oklahoma.

Heading towards the bottom, tied for 11th place are Cincinnati and UCF with a 6-10 record and conference play and seven games back. Tied for last place in the Big 12 are Oklahoma State and West Virginia, both 4-12 in conference play at nine games back. The Mountaineers are the only team that has yet to reach nine wins and win a game on the road in the Big 12. OSU has won just one game on the road, which came at Cincinnati on Feb. 21. Both teams have lost three in a row.

The Big 12 men’s tournament will begin Wednesday with the seeds to be determined in the final two games of the regular season.
