West Virginia continued their winning streak, beating BYU 76-69 on the road on Saturday.
“Kind of a grind it out type win for us. Kind of got up there early up in there into the second quarter with a pretty good lead. Liked the flow, liked the tempo of the game, it was kind of what we wanted coming into it,” Kellogg said. “Kind of survived I thought the second half. Wasn’t aesthetically pleasing, I didn’t know that we just played great or found any offensive rhythm.”
West Virginia led by as many as 18 in the second quarter, but BYU was able to cut that lead to as few as four multiple times in the second half.
“I thought to our kids credit, when they made the run, I thought we were pretty resilient. Lauren Fields was really. good today, very efficient,” Kellogg said.
Fields finished with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting, knocking down four three-pointers in the process. WVU also earned their fifth road win of the year, and handed BYU their third home loss.
“Proud of them. And I know they’ve been really good in this building and I think they were 10-2 coming in. So they had our full attention for sure and we knew we needed to play well to find a way to win. So, we escape and return home,” Kellogg said.
JJ Quinerly scored 19 points and had five assists for the Mountaineers and that was as she dealt with a minor injury.
“I’ve called her an unassuming superstar. She’s a very quiet kid by nature and doesn’t say a lot,” Kellogg said. “At times can get lost in the game a little bit and there’s times we’ve wanted her to take over. Through these last probably six games, she’s starting to take over and understanding the moments when we need her to take some big shots.”
WVU returns home on Tuesday night to face Texas Tech, before they hit the road for a two-game road trip.
