In a 91-85 upset win over No. 3 Kansas Saturday, Mountaineers center Jesse Edwards was dressed and available for the first time since fracturing his wrist against UMass on Dec. 16.
In his opening statement Monday, West Virginia men’s basketball head coach Josh Eilert said: “Feel like we’re getting closer to having a complete roster and getting a day-by-day situation with Jesse (Edwards).”
Before his injury, Edwards was averaging 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds a game, shooting 55.7% from the field.
“We got to be careful with it and make sure we’re not pushing it too fast,” Eilert said of Edwards’ recovery process.
Eilert said Edwards could’ve played against the Jayhawks if they truly needed him and he would have been willing, but also said it’s his responsibility to be smart about his player’s health and recovery.
As for Edwards’ status against UCF on Tuesday, Eilert said: “So today, when we travel down to Orlando, we’ll see where he’s at and what his comfort level is and throw him out there probably in some more five-on-five to see where he is. It’s a fluid situation, I’m not sure if he’ll go tomorrow or not.”
