Before the season began, Garrett Greene was an unknown to most people outside of West Virginia. 13 games later, Greene was named the MVP of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and gave West Virginia just their second nine-win season since joining the Big 12.
“I know personally, that’s been my lock screen ever since those polls came out just because I knew what we had in this locker room,” Greene said after the game.
Greene’s performance wasn’t his best of the season by any means, but his production on the ground as well as through the air were seen in the win.
Greene passed for 204 yards and a touchdown and ran for 75 more yards on the ground. Despite the almost 300-yard day, Greene pointed to others and thought WVU’s 30-10 win over North Carolina proved him right that the Mountaineers deserved to be picked higher than No. 14 in the Big 12 Preseason Poll.
“With guys like these two right here (Beanie Bishop and Lee Kpogba), and then our offensive line, running backs, and wideouts, I knew what we had in that locker room and it (being picked last) kind of pissed everybody off. We knew we were a better team than that and a nine-win season shows that,” Greene said.
Greene has already shut down the potential of him jumping ship into the transfer portal, and has stated multiple times how much he appreciates the people of West Virginia and who he represents. Greene gave a nod to the Mountaineer fans who showed up to Charlotte.
“That’s the special part about West Virginia. Not too many teams can have an away game in your home state. That’s why I love this state West Virginia so much because they care about football,” Greene said.
Greene and the Mountaineers will now have somewhat of a target on their back next season. They finished tied for fourth in the Big 12 standings, and had only their 19th nine-win season ever.
