Coming off of a 1-0 victory over Duquesne, West Virginia women’s soccer head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown addressed some of the question marks surrounding the current backline of her squad.
The new-look unit has given up four goals in four games, with notably two goals each given up against No. 4 Duke and No. 8 Penn State, in which both games ended with a Mountaineer loss.
“Four games and four goals is too many,” Izzo-Brown said. “We’ve discussed that’s something we’ve gotta tighten up.”
As the team prepares to hit the road to face Virginia and then Liberty, Izzo-Brown discussed what she makes of Virginia before the Thursday night matchup.
“You’re gonna see a very tactically and technically high-level program obviously. I think they made it to the elite eight last year,” Izzo-Brown said. “Just very well coached and organized and they have a lot of elite soccer players on their team, so it’s definitely gonna be another tough one that we’re walking into. We know that Virginia will present a lot of problems with us and they’re very stingy with the ball and they don’t give it up a lot.”
The Mountaineers will have another opportunity to get a ranked win against a non-conference opponent after their 2-0 loss to Duke and 2-1 loss to Penn State.
West Virginia (2-2) will face off against Virginia on Thursday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+
