REPORT: Randy Mazey to announce retirement

Randy Mazey is expected to retire as head coach of West Virginia baseball.

According to Bob Hertzel, Mazey is “expected to announce a retirement plan later today.” Mazey has been the head coach at West Virginia since 2013 and is a two-time recipient of Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Mazey took West Virginia to historic heights this past season, as they were ranked in the top ten, and had Big 12 Player of the Year JJ Wetherholt on his team. Hertzel says Mazey will stay on one more season.

Hertzel also reports current associate head coach Steve Sabins will be named Mazey’s successor. Sabins is a native of Austin, Texas, and has been on West Virginia’s coaching staff since 2016. Sabins is West Virginia’s main recruiter and has been around the Big 12 between Oklahoma State and West Virginia for over a decade.
