Brett Yormark

The Big 12 has wanted to expand their reach, and had previously announced the decision to play multiple games in Mexico.

On Thursday, they announced who will be playing in Mexico, as Kansas and Houston will play both a men’s and women’s basketball game in Mexico City at Arena CDMX in December of 2024.

Also with the announcement is the Big 12 wanting to create a bowl game in Mexico beginning in 2026.

“Mexico is a natural extension to the Big 12 footprint, and I’m thrilled to introduce Big 12 Mexico as the Conference’s first-ever international presence,” said Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. “Through Big 12 Mexico, our student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete in an international setting, and our Conference will have the chance to showcase our brand across Mexico.”

After the Big 12 first plays basketball in Mexico, that will open the door for exhibitions in baseball and women’s soccer to be played there in the future as well.

The Big 12 will also work with community outreach programming, and try to create commercial partnerships, as well as working with musicians and artists and launching an influencer marketing campaign in the region.
