With the 2022-23 academic year coming to a close this weekend, let’s take a look at some of the performances of the non-major sports at WVU during the spring semester.
Golf
West Virginia Golf had eight golf tournaments during the spring semester.
The first one was at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the end of January. The Mountaineers finished in 14th place on day one and 11th on day two.
During the month of February, West Virginia participated in three tournaments. Four individual golfers participated in the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate, then the team participated in the Gators Invitational and the Dorado Beach Collegiate.
The team tied for 10th place at the Gators Invitational and eighth at the Dorado Beach Collegiate.
The Mountaineers then participated in two tournaments in March, the Schenkel Invitational and The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. They finished 12th at the Schenkel Invitational and 14th at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate.
West Virginia hosted its lone tournament of the season in mid-April. They finished third at the Mountaineer Invitational.
They finished the season playing at the Big 12 Tournament in late April, finishing in ninth place.
Men’s Soccer
West Virginia Men’s Soccer played five exhibition games this spring, going 5-0 in those contests.
They won home matchups against Wake Forest 2-0 and Navy 3-0, and road matchups against Wright State 4-0, Maryland 3-2, and VCU 1-0.
Women’s Soccer
West Virginia Women’s Soccer played five exhibition game much like the men did, going 3-1-1 in those contests.
They won home games against Duquesne 2-1 and James Madison 4-0, then won on the road at Virginia Tech 4-2. They lost to Pitt on the road 2-0 and tied at home against Virginia 2-2.
Swimming & Diving
West Virginia Swimming & Diving participated in meets during the first three months of the semester.
Both the men and women lost in a meet at Pitt on January 13-14. The women later won at Iowa State the following week against the Cyclones and Northern Iowa.
Both squads later won their matchups on Senior Day at home against Villanova on January 28. The diving team closed out the regular season the following week at home against Penn State.
In late February, the Mountaineers competed in the Big 12 Championships. The men finished in third place, while the women finished in fourth.
In March, the team competed in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships. The men finished in 10th place and the women finished in 14th.
They finished out the season competing in the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. The men finished in 12th place, while the women finished 17th.
Junior Danny Berlitz represented the team at the 2023 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
Wrestling
The West Virginia Wrestling team went 10-5 on the season. They went 3-2 during the month of January and February each.
Five wrestlers landed spots on the Big 12 Podium at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship. Four of them later participated and advanced to day two of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Fifth-year senior Killian Cardinale earned his second All-American honor and later earned an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Gymnastics
The West Virginia Gymnastics team finished with a 12-9 record. They went 7-4 during the month of January, 2-3 during the month of February, and 3-2 during the month of March.
They hosted the Big 12 Championship on March 18 and finished third. They later competed in the second round of the first session of the NCAA Regional Championships, where they finished their season at fourth place.
Tennis
The West Virginia Tennis Team went 11-12 this season. They went 2-1 during the month of January, 5-2 in February, 4-4 in March, and 0-5 in April.
They finished their season on an eight-game losing streak, falling to TCU in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on April 20.
Rifle
The West Virginia Rifle Team went 16-4 this season. They went 5-2 during the month of January, then 1-1 in February.
They finished first place at the GARC Championship on February 25-26. They ultimately ended their season finishing fifth place at the NCAA Championships in March.
Track & Field
West Virginia Track & Field is one of two sports that are still ongoing at the moment, with the other being baseball.
The team started out the semester competing indoors at the Nittany Lion Challenge on January 14. They later had more meets at Penn State in the Penn State National, Sykes & Sabock Challenge, and the Penn State Tune Up.
They also had meets at the Youngstown Invitational, the BU Valentine, and the Marshall Invite.
The indoor team finished ninth place at the Big 12 Championships on February 24-25. They later finished the indoor season at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 38th in the final rankings.
The outdoor team opened play on March 17-18 at home in the Stan Romanoski Open. Later in March, they competed in the Raleigh Relays and Stanford Invitational.
In April, the Mountaineers hosted the Mountaineer Showcase and Mountaineer Twilight. They also visited the Dalton Ebanks Invitational, the Bison Outdoor Classic, and the Penn Relays.
On Saturday, West Virginia hosted the WVU Last Chance Event at The Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park. They later play in the Big 12 Championships next weekend in Norman, OK.
