According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, former WVU basketball star Mike Gansey has been named the newest general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Gansey has worked his way up, being an intern, scout, general manager in the NBA G-League, and most recently the assistant general manager for the Cavaliers.
Gansey played for West Virginia from 2004-2006 under head coach John Beilein after transferring from Saint Bonaventure. Gansey led the Mountaineers to the NCAA Tournament each of his two years in Morgantown, making the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once in the process.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently 35-23 and have plenty of young talent for Gansey to work with. The Cavaliers won the NBA Finals in 2016, but have not made the playoffs since the departure of LeBron James in 2018. Gansey will be tasked with building around his young core and taking them back to the top.
