It’s a new era for WVU Women’s Volleyball with new head coach Jen Greeny taking over the program this past off-season. Greeny has gotten the season underway at the Wake Forest Invitational where the Mountaineers went 2-1 after defeating Hofstra Sunday afternoon.
After a tough loss in five sets to the host of the Invitational, Wake Forest, WVU responded to get back above .500 over the Pride. The Mountaineers were led by redshirt junior Cassidy Tanton with a team-high 18 kills. Alexis Finnvold also led the team in assists with 35.
In the first set, the Mountaineers found themselves down in a 19-15 hole but would answer with five straight points to take the lead and not look back. The won the set 25-22 after a set-point kill form Laila Ibrahim.
The second set was back and forth with neither team being able to grab full control of the set. The Mountaineers had the largest lead of the set with three points at 22-19. WVU would once again win another close set 25-22 to take a 2-0 set lead off of a Finnvold kill.
The Pride would be able to avoid the sweep in the third set in much more dominate fashion than the first two sets with a set score of 25-16.
In the fourth set, the Mountaineers avoid having to go to a fifth set and win the closest set yet 26-24 and win the match. Hofstra once led in the fourth set 23-19 but WVU would rally and score five straight points and seven of the last eight. Tanton ended the game on her game-high third ace of the game to secure the win for WVU.
The team will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 6 at the NDSU/UND Tournament in Fargo, N.D. and Grand Forks, N.D.
