Garrett Greene is coming off of a standout 2023 season at West Virginia. He was among Pro Football Focus’s highest graded quarterbacks of 2023 and helped West Virginia exceed expectations and win nine games.
At this time last year, Greene was in a quarterback competition with Nicco Marchiol. Fast forward to today and he is now the unquestioned starter at the game’s most important position for the Mountaineers.
One area of his game that didn’t jump off the charts though was his completion percentage. Greene completed 52.7 percent of his passes last season, a number that can only be bumped up to 62.8 percent if you go off of PFF’s adjusted completion percentage.
Greene says he has been working to become more accurate of a passer for 2024.
“I think that’s kind of the main focus for this spring for me is accuracy,” Green said. “All offseason and throwing with the guys, I felt really really good, so hopefully I can just keep getting better at that.”
After completing 52.7 percent of passes last season, Greene is setting the bar high as to where he wants to be with his completion percentage.
“I want to be in the 70’s, high 60’s is the bottom floor like 68 percent.”
Greene is also working with a new quarterbacks coach this season in Tyler Allen. He says that Coach Allen is helping him work to become that better passer.
“Coach [Tyler Allen] has done a great job of kind of outlining the points of emphasis this spring. One of them is precision accuracy, letting the ball take them to where they don’t have to break stride and they can just run through balls.”
Head Coach Neal Brown talked about Garrett Greene and compared him to former Auburn and Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and how he wasn’t very accurate early in his career then became one of the most accurate passers in the country in 2023.
“I think Garrett is fully capable of making a big jump in completion percentage. So that’s the number one thing for him is continue not only to grasp what we’re doing offensively, but he’s got to get his completion percentage better and then getting some of the touch throws down,” Brown said.
Greene is now being regarded as one of the top returning quarterbacks in the country for 2024 and with that comes higher expectations. He is focused on winning and fixing his weaknesses.
“Last year, I was focused on helping this team win, and this year that’s my main goal. I didn’t perform at the level I thought I should have, so that’s what this offseason’s kind of been about is finding my weaknesses. We found those early and then working these last two months to correct those.”
West Virginia is currently in the midst of spring practices with their 2024 Spring Game set for Saturday, April 27 at Milan Puskar Stadium. The season opener comes August 31 when West Virginia is set to host Penn State.
