West Virginia has opted to move on from interim head coach Josh Eilert after a 9-23 finish this season. HoopDirt has their betting odds as to who might become the next head basketball coach.
The current betting favorite is a current Division 1 head coach at -250. HoopDirt noted that WVU athletic director Wren Baker needs to find someone who has a track record of building programs and that there are too many quality head coaches out there to go with an unproven assistant.
James Madison’s Mark Byington has the best odds among specific names at +275. He currently has James Madison at 31-3 on the season with their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2013.
Some of the other names on the list include College of Charleston’s Pat Kelsey at +400, Drake’s Darien DeVries at +525, Youngstown State’s Jerrod Calhoun at +675, Colorado State’s Niko Medved at +900, Florida Atlantic’s Dusty May at +925, and Chris Mack at +950.
A current D1 assistant coach is currently at +975 in betting odds, though HoopDirt notes that Baker should probably not look for an assistant as head coach.
The list closes out with Appalachian State’s Dustin Kerns at +1100, and Indiana State’s Josh Schertz also at +1100, and even has former head coach Bob Huggins at the end with +25000 betting odds. Ken Kendrick has claimed that Huggins’ “future with WVU sports is totally at an end.”
Baker said in a recent press conference that he hopes to have a new head coach hired by the time the Final Four wraps up.
