Big 12 Basketball Weekly Recap — January 25

We are now three weeks into conference play and the Big 12 continues to make its case as the best conference in college basketball.

In the latest AP Poll, the Big 12 had a nation-leading seven teams represented in it: Houston at fourth, Kansas at seventh, Oklahoma at 11th, Baylor at 15th, Texas Tech at 20th, BYU at 21st, and Iowa State at 23rd. The Big 12 also has Kansas State, TCU, and Texas receiving votes.

As of games through Jan. 24, 10 out of the 14 teams have five or fewer losses with every team having played at least 18 games. West Virginia and Oklahoma State are the only teams in the conference that do not currently have a winning record.

Let’s take a look at each Big 12 team and how they fared in games over the last week. This list is sorted alphabetically.

No. 15 Baylor (14-4, 3-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Baylor lost a road game against Texas 75-73. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Texas hit a game-winning layup at the buzzer.

Baylor was off during the weekdays this week and up next is a home game against TCU on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a road game against UCF on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

No. 21 BYU (14-5, 2-4 Big 12)

Last Saturday BYU lost a Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 25 Texas Tech 85-78. BYU led for much of the game before Texas Tech rallied to win it at the end.

This past Tuesday, BYU lost a home game against No. 4 Houston 75-68. The two teams were tied with under two minutes remaining before Houston went on a 7-0 run to close out the game.

Up next for BYU is a home game against Texas on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a road game against West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Cincinnati (13-6, 2-4 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Cincinnati lost a home game against Oklahoma 69-65. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Oklahoma managed to hold off Cincinnati at the end.

This past Monday, Cincinnati lost a road game against No. 7 Kansas 74-69. Close losses continue to be a recurring theme for Cincinnati as this is the fourth loss in the last five games with all those losses coming by five or fewer points.

Up next for Cincinnati is a home game against UCF on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a road game against West Virginia on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

No. 4 Houston (17-2, 4-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Houston won a home game against UCF 57-42. The nation’s number-one-ranked scoring defense allowed fewer than 45 points for the sixth time this season.

This past Tuesday, Houston won a road game against BYU 75-68. The two teams were tied with under two minutes remaining before Houston went on a 7-0 run to close out the game.

Up next for Houston is a home game against Kansas State on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a road game against Texas on Monday, Jan. 29.

No. 23 Iowa State (15-4, 4-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Iowa State won a Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 19 TCU 73-72. Iowa State led by as much as 21 points in this one before managing to hold off a TCU rally for the win.

Yesterday, Iowa State won a home game against Kansas State 78-67. The two teams were tied with 4:11 to go before Iowa State pulled away for the victory.

Up next for Iowa State is a Top 25 showdown at home against No. 7 Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is another potential Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 15 Baylor on Saturday, Feb. 3.

No. 7 Kansas (16-3, 4-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Kansas lost a road game against West Virginia 91-85. The 91 points allowed were the most in a game this season for Kansas.

This past Monday, Kansas won a home game against Cincinnati 74-69. Cincinnati only led in the first half and Kansas managed to squeak out the win at the end.

Up next for Kansas is a Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a home game against Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Kansas State (14-5, 4-2 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Kansas State won a home game against Oklahoma State 70-66. Oklahoma State led for much of the game before Kansas took the lead and squeaked out the win.

Yesterday, Kansas State lost a road game against No. 23 Iowa State 78-67. The two teams were tied with 4:11 to go before Iowa State pulled away for the victory.

Up next for Kansas State is a road game against No. 4 Houston on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a home game against No. 11 Oklahoma on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

No. 11 Oklahoma (15-4, 3-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Oklahoma won a road game against Cincinnati 69-65. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Oklahoma managed to hold off Cincinnati at the end.

This past Tuesday, Oklahoma lost a home game against Texas 75-60. Texas led for much of the game and managed to take care of business against the Sooners.

Up next for Oklahoma is a Top 20 showdown at home against No. 20 Texas Tech on Saturday, Jan. 27. Following that is a road game against Kansas State on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Oklahoma State (8-11, 0-6 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Oklahoma State lost a road game against Kansas State 70-66. Oklahoma State led for much of the game before Kansas took the lead and squeaked out the win.

This past Tuesday, the Cowboys lost a home game against TCU 74-69. Oklahoma State led by as much as 17 points before they surrendered the lead and the win.

Up next for Oklahoma State is a home game against West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a road game against No. 7 Kansas on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

TCU (14-5, 3-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, TCU lost a home game against No. 24 Iowa State 73-72. Iowa State led by as much as 21 points in this one before managing to hold off a TCU rally for the win.

This past Tuesday, TCU won a road game against Oklahoma State 74-69. Oklahoma State led by as much as 17 points before they surrendered the lead and the win.

Up next for the Horned Frogs is a road game against No. 15 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a home game against No. 20 Texas Tech on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Texas (14-5, 3-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Texas won a home game against No. 9 Baylor 75-73. The game was tightly contested throughout, and Texas hit a game-winning layup at the buzzer.

This past Tuesday, Texas won a road game against Oklahoma 75-60. Texas led for much of the game and managed to take care of business against Oklahoma.

Up next for Texas is a road game against No. 21 BYU on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a home game against No. 4 Houston on Monday, Jan. 29.

No. 20 Texas Tech (15-3, 4-1 Big 12)

Last Saturday, Texas Tech won a Top 25 showdown against No. 20 BYU 85-78. BYU led for much of the game before Texas Tech rallied to win it at the end.

Texas Tech was off during the weekdays this week and up next for Texas Tech is a Top 25 showdown on the road against No. 11 Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a road game against TCU on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

UCF (12-6, 3-3 Big 12)

Last Saturday, UCF lost a road game against No. 5 Houston 57-42. Their 42 points scored were the fewest in a game this season.

This past Tuesday, UCF won a home game against West Virginia 72-59. UCF led the whole game and managed to take care of business.

Up next for UCF is a road game against Cincinnati on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a home game against No. 15 Baylor on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

West Virginia (7-12, 2-4 Big 12)

Last Saturday, West Virginia won a home game against No. 3 Kansas 91-85. This was their second upset win against a ranked team and the 91 points scored tied a season high.

This past Tuesday, West Virginia lost a road game against UCF 72-59. West Virginia never led in this one and UCF managed to take care of business.

Up next for West Virginia is a road game against Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 27. After that is a home game against Cincinnati on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
