While the final three games for West Virginia did not go the way they had planned, the Mountaineers claimed their first Big 12 title in school history, and also became the first men’s sport to win a Big 12 regular season championship since WVU joined the conference.
“You guys are the freaking co-champs. That’s pretty cool man,” West Virginia head coach Randy Mazey said to his team after WVU’s loss on Friday.
West Virginia won 39 games in the regular season, just one less than their program record 40 wins in 1994.
Head coach Randy Mazey’s ball club won six of their eight Big 12 series, and share the Big 12 title with at least Texas, and possibly Oklahoma State.
The Mountaineers are still in position to host their first regional since 2019, and their third in school history. Depending on how the Mountaineers do in the Big 12 Tournament, they could find themselves back in contention to be a top-eight national seed.
