Tonight, the No. 14 West Virginia Mountaineers took on the Penn State Nittany Lions at Medlar Park in State College in their anticipated rivalry game.
The Nitanny Lions came out swinging with designated hitter Jack Porter homering to right-center to make the score 1-0 Penn State after the first.
After 2.2 innings pitched, West Virginia starter Ben Hudson was pulled. Hudson allowed four hits and one run in his start.
The score remained 1-0 through four innings until third baseman Bryce Molinaro hit a single into right field, scoring two. The score was now 3-0 Penn State.
After six scoreless innings, second baseman Spencer Barnett got the Mountaineers on the board after barreling a two-run homer. This made the score 3-2 Penn State.
After Grant Hussey was walked in the top of the ninth, Armani Guzman came in to pinch run.
Guzman advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by Brodie Kresser. The Mountaineers had a glimpse of hope in their last chance to score.
Coming up next, Barnett fouled out to third base, and the Mountaineers were quickly down to their last out with a runner in scoring position.
With the game on the line, leadoff hitter Skylar King stepped up to the plate. The count became 1-2, and West Virginia was down to their last strike.
Closer Chase Renner snuck a fastball on the outside part of the plate, striking King out looking.
Mason Butash was awarded the win, and Renner was awarded his second save of the season.
This marks Penn State’s 25th win on the season, now making them 25-14.
West Virginia is now 34-5, losing for their first time in 15 games.
Steve Sabins and the Mountaineers look forward as they travel down to Orlando to play UCF in a three-game series starting Friday.
