The Mountaineers will begin their season Monday at the Coliseum, featuring a lineup filled with new faces.
They are set to face mid-major Robert Morris in their regular-season opener. The Colonials finished last season with a 10-22 record but showed promise in their exhibition game against a strong Villanova team.
Although they lost the exhibition 87-73, they were outscored by just seven points in each half, a competitive performance. The improvements were bolstered by transfers D.J. Greene from Bowling Green and Josh Omojafo from Gannon.
This game will serve as a good test for the Mountaineers as they begin their new campaign. The team returns only one player from last season, Ofri Naveh.
In their initial exhibition matchup, they took on Charleston University, a Division II team, in which they beat handily.
Tucker DeVries led the Mountaineers with 18 points. DeVries is the son of newly appointed head coach Darian DeVries. Both joined WVU from Drake University.
Additional contributions came from Amani Hansberry, Javon Small, and Jonathan Powell, each scoring in double digits.
Jayden Stone, a transfer from Detroit Mercy, will be sidelined for the Mountaineers with an upper-body injury. Head coach Darian DeVries told the media earlier this week that Stone got “banged up” during practice. Stone averaged more than 20 points per game last season.
No official odds have been posted yet, but OddsShark.com has listed WVU as a 16-point favorite.
