The West Virginia women’s soccer team was shut out by Texas Tech 1-0 on a brisk Thursday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.
The contest was back-and-forth for most of the first half before Texas Tech drew first blood less than five minutes before halftime. Taylor Zdrojewski scored for the Red Raiders on a penalty kick that hit the bottom right of the net in the 40th minute.
In the first half, the Mountaineers were unable to capitalize on six corner kicks. They had three shots, with TTU goalie Faith Ngyuen making one save.
The second half began with Texas Tech receiving two yellow cards. Storie Sexton received one in the 48th minute and Macy Blackburn in the 50th, both for unsporting conduct.
In the 58th minute, the Red Raiders had an opportunity to go up 2-0 with a free kick, but West Virginia Mackenzie Smith made a crucial save.
The Mountaineers were set up with a golden with a one-on-one penalty kick, but Ngyuen dove right saving the attempt by Lilly McCarthy. As time was starting to wind down WVU was looking to create offensive production and get a score.
While the final 20 minutes were uneventful for the most part, Smith made two saves for West Virginia, but Texas Tech’s defensive efforts prevented another Mountaineers shot on goal.
In the end, WVU fell to the Red Raiders 1-0. The loss was their first at home. They are now 10-4-2 on the season (6-2-1 in the Big 12).
They’ll host Colorado in their next contest, last home game and Senior Day on Sunday.
