The Big 12 Championships are already proving valuable for West Virginia Track and Field, despite the Mountaineers’ minimal day one participation in Waco, Tex.
Redshirt sophomore Emily Bryce and freshman Lilian Haught represented West Virginia alone on Thursday in the first outdoor conference championship appearance for each. Bryce competed in her second Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships in February and has run twice in the Big 12 Cross Country Championships.
Bryce was the first of the two Mountaineers to compete Thursday, though her appearance in the 1500 meter did not begin until 9:40 p.m. CT. Bryce finished in 4:38.94 for 20th place out of 26 competitors.
Starting even later, in the tournament’s penultimate event of the day, Haught ran in the 400 meter hurdles event at 11:10 p.m. CT. Finishing in 1:02.23, Haught placed 18th of 22 and secured a personal record.
Oklahoma State leads the women’s championships with 18 team points after the first day. West Virginia has yet to record any team points and thus is alongside Kansas, TCU, and UCF at the bottom of the standings.
Day two of the Big 12 Championships begins at 10:15 a.m. ET on Friday with the women’s javelin throw event. WVU once again begins its day late in the 800 meter at 7 p.m. ET. Three Mountaineers compete in each the 800 and the 3000 meter steeplechase, which kicks off at 9:20 p.m.
