Following WVU’s win over Pitt on Wednesday, Mountaineer head coach Randy Mazey gave an injury update on two key pieces to his team.
The first was David Hagaman, who left Sunday’s game with an apparent injury to his throwing arm, and the second was JJ Wetherholt who was taken out of Tuesday’s contest.
Mazey said there is still no official word on Hagaman’s future status, saying they are still talking to multiple doctors.
“We’ll see what Hagaman’s deal is. Looks like we’re going to be without him for a while,” Mazey said on Sunday after the game.
Hagaman threw 13 pitches, before signaling for Mazey to come out of the dugout after giving up a hit. That would be the last pitch he threw of the afternoon.
“We’re still sending results to doctors, that type of thing. Hate to speculate,” Mazey said of Hagaman on Tuesday night.
Hagaman has pitched 35.0 innings for WVU this season, which is third-most on the team. He has a 5.91 ERA, with 49 strikeouts.
The other piece of injury news was with Wetherholt who left in the third inning against Pitt. Wetherholt made his first start at shortstop since his return, as he had previously only started in the designated hitter role. Mazey was tight lipped about Wetherholt’s status, making light of Wetherholt’s situation.
“He came to me in the third inning and said, ‘coach, I haven’t eaten since breakfast, I’m hungry.’ So I sent him across the street to Buffalo Wild Wings to get some dinner,” Mazey said.
Since returning from his hamstring injury, Wetherholt has played in eight games and is hitting .357 with two home runs and eight runs batted in during that span.
West Virginia is off until Friday, when they head to Lubbock for a three-game series against Texas Tech.
