Mia Cheatwood outdoes qualifying time and WVU record at NCAA Championships

Mia Cheatwood put the future of WVU Swimming was on full display Friday, and it was just the start of things to come at the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Mia Cheatwood, WVU’s lone swimmer in Athens, Ga. for the NCAA Championships this week, swam Friday in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke competition. Finishing in 59.73 seconds, Cheatwood placed 28th out of 49 competitors.

In doing so, Cheatwood outswam her own program record for WVU’s first recorded time under one minute in the event. Cheatwood set her previous record of 1:00.08 at the Big 12 Championships in Morgantown on March 1 during preliminary rounds. The time seeded Cheatwood fourth for the Big 12 finals and earned her a place in the NCAA Championships.

Now, Cheatwood is swimming better than ever on the biggest stage in collegiate swimming, and Friday was only the beginning.

Cheatwood will compete to break her second program record on Saturday, this time in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her current record, also swam at the Big 12 Championships, sits at 2:09.13, which earned her a third-place finish in the Big 12 Championship finals.

Fellow sophomore Abigail Sullivan joins Cheatwood Saturday as WVU’s lone diver for the NCAA Championships. Sullivan will compete in platform diving. Both Mountaineers are making NCAA Championship debuts this season.
