On Tuesday, WVU Quarterbacks coach, Sean Reagan, took the time to give an update on how the development of quarterbacks Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol has gone through 13 spring practices.
For Reagan, this is his first season in Morgantown without a transfer quarterback, but Reagan said the team did not go after one because, “we believe one of those two guys, if not both of those two guys can help us win football games.”
Reagan said today was probably the worst day for both Greene and Marchiol, but up until today he said he was pleased with how both have been performing throughout the spring practices.
“Each one of them have improved on something that they wanted to improve on,” Reagan said. “Then today happened and we were not very good. Probably our worst day at quarterback today, but up until today I’ve been very, very, pleased where we are at that position between Garrett and Nicco.”
Between those two, Regan has identified specific areas where he wanted each one to improve.
“With Nicco it’s footwork. We’ve really really harped hard on footwork and eye placement,” Reagan said of the redshirt-freshman. “Before today he was night and day from day one until day 12.”
As for Greene, Reagan said it is about him using his athleticism to his advantage, but not escaping the pocket too early.
“With Garrett, it’s more of a pocket presence and understanding we can get to our second and third read before we get through it,” Reagan said. “He’s done a very good job of that for the most part. Still trying to hone in on slowing eyes down and he’s gotten better at that every single day.”
Reagan said the thing he has noticed the most improvement since the winter was their eye discipline. He said that it has come a long way and both players are seeing what they are supposed to see.
Reagan touched on what could be the difference from now and into the fall on what could help one win the starting job over the other saying “if they keep battling the way they are battling right now, it is going to be a tough decision. Both of those guys are executing at a high level. It is going to come down to who is more detailed most of the time.”
